Monitoring inland rivers with the MOLONARI project: 3 questions to understand how research is developing open source tools to observe, model, and visualize exchanges between rivers and groundwater

The MOLONARI (Local Monitoring of Groundwater-River Exchange) project, led by Mines Paris – PSL as part of the TERRA FORMA Equipex + program, aims to design a comprehensive environmental monitoring solution. Its originality lies in combining submerged sensors, scientific modeling, and software interfaces in a coherent ecosystem, from the field to analysis.

Three groups of engineering students are working together to develop the building blocks of the project:

  • Hardware, for the sensors and their reliability in the field,
  • pyheatmy, for modeling and data processing,
  • Molonaviz, for managing and visualizing the results.

MOLONARI illustrates learning through research and interdisciplinary collaboration in the service of understanding and preserving water resources.
