Launched in April 2022 by Mines Paris – PSL, a leading engineering school, and directed by Nadia Maïzi, Professor at Mines Paris – PSL, Director of the CMA and co-author of the 6th IPCC report, The Transition Institute 1.5 works for research related to the low-carbon transition in order to provide informed scientific answers to the major challenge of carbon neutrality. Forum TTI.5 “African Perspectives on Climate Change”

On Wednesday May 29, 2024, The Transition Institute 1.5 is delighted to be holding its second Forum in Paris on the theme of “African Perspectives on Climate Change”.

Forum challenges

This one-day conference aims to highlight African perspectives on an international issue that is often dominated by the voices of Northern countries: the challenges of climate change. The TTI.5 Forum proposes to discuss these issues through the prism of experts, public decision-makers and opinion leaders from different regions of Africa. They will share their insights, expertise and experiences with us. Africa is one of the continents most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, despite its low contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions. Climate change has profound implications for development, food security, public health, political and economic stability, as well as biodiversity and ecosystems. African voices are increasingly present on the international stage, advocating more ambitious global climate action, greater climate justice and equitable participation in international climate negotiations. We wanted to highlight these challenges at our annual Forum. Participants will explore with our guests the challenges of climate change mitigation, adaptation and negotiations in global climate governance. This is the Institute’s flagship event, and we’re expecting around 300 people from all disciplines and backgrounds (academics, corporate executives, public decision-makers). You’ll be able to take an active part in the debates by exchanging views with the experts in a question-and-answer session.

What is The Transition Institute 1.5?

Created in 2022, The Transition Institute 1.5 – 1.5 as an echo of the maximum temperature rise target advocated by the IPCC – is an initiative launched by École Mines Paris – PSL with the support of its Foundation. The Institute is headed by Nadia MAÏZI, Professor at Mines Paris – PSL, Director of the Centre de Mathématiques Appliquées (CMA Mines Paris – PSL) and co-author of the 6th IPCC report. The Transition Institute 1.5 is École Mines Paris – PSL’s first transdisciplinary research institute, supporting, funding and disseminating research related to the low-carbon transition.

To face up to the climate emergency and follow the IPCC’s recommendation to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial era, our societies must commit to carbon neutrality and think about adaptation. Yet nowhere on our planet is the expected transition taking place. The Transition Institute 1.5 aims to provide informed, multidisciplinary scientific answers to the major challenge of carbon neutrality, so that one person’s solutions do not become another’s problems.
