25 years of energy optimization: Gilles Guerassimoff looks back on the history of the OSE Specialized Master’s program

The Specialized Master’s (MS) in Energy Systems Optimization (OSE) was created in the early 2000s. It embodies the activities of the OSE research group, which was then jointly led by the Energy Center (CENERG) and the Center for Applied Mathematics (CMA). Gilles Guerassimoff, program director, looks back on the creation, evolution, and current challenges of the Specialized Master’s in Energy Systems Optimization (MS OSE).
 

After seven years of existence, the MS OSE is now operated entirely by the CMA.

On this occasion, the Master’s program took on its current name of Specialized Master’s in Energy Systems Optimization. Gilles Guerassimoff, who was involved in its creation and managed the program on a daily basis, officially took over as director. ” The first name of this MS was: Energy Engineering and Management,“ he explains. He continues, ”This reflected the energy management concerns of the time and societal changes.“ Indeed, energy markets were opening up to competition for the first time in Europe, and ”it was necessary to offer training for engineers in this new multidisciplinary and competitive environment .”

Teaching linked to developments in energy

This program offers teaching based on a comprehensive view of energy: understanding how the energy chain works (from production to consumption) and proposing tools to optimize it. Project management and financial aspects, as well as economic aspects, are covered by long-standing partners EDHEC and CREDEN at the University of Montpellier.

Another essential aspect of the Specialized Master’s program is the involvement of numerous industrialists: “Optimization has moved from a more theoretical approach to applications in concrete cases from industry.” The educational content and format of the MS OSE also evolve in line with industrial and social demand. “The approach to energy systems and energy markets is based on the principle of optimality. The problem is posed in mathematical terms and methods are adapted to solve it. This optimal vision is also used in long-term forecasting models, which shed light on possible futures for the evolution of energy systems under climate constraints, for example.”

Today, following the opening of markets to competition, the MS OSE program continues to address the issues of decarbonization and climate change in a multidisciplinary manner, with essential additions such as:

  • machine learning and stochastic optimization
  • sustainable finance
  • the economics of various energy markets.

Candidate profiles and career opportunities

“Until 2007, the profiles recruited were engineers or graduates with five years of higher education who wanted to complete their training with complementary disciplines and specialize in energy in the broadest sense. Since 2007, some applicants have had less technical profiles and have been more oriented towards business school or even political science,” explains Gilles Guerassimoff. ” These candidates already have experience in energy, and after refreshing their math and physics skills, they acquire high-level training in energy that complements their geopolitical or commercial skills.”

The MS OSE now offers a variety of career opportunities in important positions in research, business analysis and monitoring, technical sales, and even entrepreneurship.

The OSE conference

This event, which marks the end of the academic year, has been held since the master’s program was created. It fits naturally into the school’s project-based teaching approach. In addition to projects whose topics are provided by an industrial partner, a local authority, or a start-up, students are given the conference topic at the beginning of the year, based on a current issue. Students must then organize an “event” that can take various forms (conference, symposium, trade show, congress).

The congress format we know today has been in place since 2009. It allows students to explore a given theme in depth and exchange ideas with specialists in the field. The proceedings of this conference are published by Presses des Mines and, since 2020, have been broadcast live on YouTube.

As a preview, the OSE 2026 conference will focus on the theme of energy optimization in healthcare centers (hospitals or clinics).
