Thermal and environmental barrier coatings for harsh environments: an exciting workshop at Mines Paris – PSL.

We are delighted to share the success of the recent workshop on thermal and environmental barrier coatings, which took place on 22 and 23 February at Mines Paris – PSL. The event was organised by Vincent Guipont and Robert Vaßen, marking the successful conclusion of the collaboration between the Centre des Matériaux and the Forschungszentrum Jülich IEK1. The LABEGA project, funded by industrial giants such as Safran, Oerlikon Metco and BMWK, was the driving force behind this initiative.

The LABEGA project focuses on optimising the microstructure of Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBC), led by Jens Igel’s PhD programme, and on innovative in situ damage analysis using Laser Shock Damage Monitoring (LASDAM), led by Lara Mahfouz’s PhD programme.

The workshop was a major event for researchers and professionals in the field, highlighting the latest advances in thermal and environmental barrier coatings. Highlights of the event included presentations on innovations in materials and processes, with a focus on technologies such as APS, EB-PVD and SPS adapted to very high temperatures.

Discussions also explored experimental methods, in situ analysis, realistic environments (such as temperature gradients and humidity) and LASER-assisted diagnostics (LASAT and LASDAM). In addition, lifetime modelling, including complex loading scenarios, was a key topic of the workshop.

The lectures were given by renowned experts such as Lara Mahfouz, Arturo Flores Renteria, Jens Igel, Simon Goutier, Daniel E. Mack, Uwe Schulz, Jonathan C. Lidong Zhao, Aurélie Quet, Guido Reisel, Damien Texier, Niama Radi, Susanne Schrufer (of Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co. KG Aero Engines), Frederic Rousseau (IRCP), Vincent Guipont, Pascale Kanoute, Mario Rudolphi, Francis Rebillat (LCTS), Christian Kontermann (TU Darmstadt), and many others.

We would like to express our gratitude to the local committee, in particular Niama Radi, Emna BEN ROMDHANE, PhD, Eliott Degouilles, Louise Marioton and Jennifer Martial, as well as financial partners such as the Centre des Matériaux, Forschungszentrum Jülich, Safran and Oerlikon Metco, for their invaluable support in making this exceptional workshop possible.

In conclusion, this workshop was a crucial platform for knowledge sharing, fruitful collaboration and the promotion of innovations in the field of barrier coatings.
