Biography

Samuel Forest is a researcher specializing in materials mechanics and the numerical modeling of mechanical behavior at various scales. His work focuses primarily on the development of advanced constitutive models for metallic materials, incorporating phenomena such as crystalline plasticity, size effects, and multiphysical couplings (mechanics, diffusion, oxidation). His expertise includes the study of plastic instabilities, such as the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, using approaches that combine experiments and finite element simulations, with a particular focus on statistical and dynamic indicators to characterize transitions between deformation regimes. He has also contributed to the development of thermodynamically consistent formulations for large deformations, particularly in the context of the multiplicative decomposition of the strain gradient and the use of isocline intermediate configurations. His research addresses a wide range of applications, from nickel-based superalloys to metallic coatings, including structured materials and additive manufacturing processes, with a focus on predicting degradation and damage mechanisms under thermomechanical stresses.

Mechanics of Continuous Media

Course Director

In-person instruction is structured around plenary sessions in the lecture hall and tutorial sessions in smaller classes (PC) with fewer students. Independent work consists (in addition to the engine disassembly and reassembly activity mentioned above) of studies conducted individually or in small groups: work based on course materials (handouts, textbook), and solving two problems selected from an extensive list of highly varied problems (as mentioned above; see details below).

From physics to music theory: sound and noise, sound production and propagation, scales and harmonics, physical and instrumental characteristics of notes. Physiology, perception, and music. Musical theories from Pythagoras to Rameau. Engineering in 19th-century instrument making (the Boehm system, the saxophone, the piano). Musical systems (scales, chords, temperaments). Wood and tonewood; the influence of materials on instruments; the specific characteristics of string, wind, and percussion instruments. New materials in instrument making (case study on composite-material bows; design and engineering in instrument making). Field trip to the collections of the Museum of Music (Cité de la Musique). Automatic processing of musical signals for sound indexing; training in listening; a concert and a lecture on the clarinet.
