Biography
Emmanuel Garbolino is a researcher specializing in plant ecology and the analysis of the spatiotemporal dynamics of ecosystems. His work focuses on several major themes, including the study of large-scale patterns of plant biodiversity, the impact of global changes (climate, land use) on the functional and phylogenetic diversity of plant communities, and the evaluation of conservation networks such as Natura 2000. His expertise also extends to the integration of innovative methods, such as machine learning and language models, to improve habitat classification and the prediction of species assemblages. Throughout his research, he has contributed to the analysis of biases in biodiversity databases (GBIF, EVA, GIFT) and to modeling ecosystem responses to anthropogenic pressures, with a focus on Mediterranean regions, wetlands, and island environments. His recent work explores the interactions between functional traits, macroclimate, and edaphic conditions, as well as their role in ecosystem resilience to disturbances.

Teaching
Geoscience and the Anthropocene (GA)
The “Geosciences and the Anthropocene” GA course takes place at several sites impacted by human activity, specifically chosen to deepen students’ understanding of the challenges related to climate change and the energy transition. This course is organized as a one-week intensive off-campus session. For logistical reasons related to the large number of students, the class is divided into six groups working independently under the guidance of a multidisciplinary teaching team. The six groups will be based in the following areas: Paris and Morvan (Île-de-France) Digne-les-Bains and surrounding area (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) Laragne and surrounding area (Hautes-Alpes) Romanche and Drac Valleys (Isère and Hautes-Alpes) Western Pyrenees (French and Spanish) Roya Valley (Alpes-Maritimes) For each group, the teaching team consists of 2 to 3 faculty members, each of whom will supervise a group of 8 students. Within these small groups, instruction will alternate between observation sessions of natural objects, independent work sessions in which students are invited to observe and analyze the geological terrain relevant to the instruction they have received, tutorials, and visits to key sites or engineering structures. Over the course of the week, each team will present the results of their workshops to all the students in their group.

Processes and Energy (P&E) track
Course Schedule: The objectives of the personal project preparation periods are to gain hands-on experience with the current scope and equipment of the process industries, and—through industry lectures—to understand the skills, organizational structures, and ways of thinking that drive their progress. These sessions are structured around four modules spread over two weeks: - 2A - Raising awareness of the challenges to be addressed: energy, water, health, nutrition, the environment, and globalization—followed by three weeks of training - 3A - fundamentals of process design, innovative processes, and change management in industrial companies. At the same time, students prepare technology watch reports—CO₂ capture via oxy-combustion, hydrogen, and microalgae; challenges and limitations of ethanol production from wheat; impacts of incinerating new types of waste; new catalytic converters, etc. The personal project, running from November through June, challenges students to produce original work addressing real-world industrial needs at a major company in one of the sectors mentioned above. Topics are carefully selected in consultation with the student.
