Biography
Anne-Françoise Gourgues-Lorenzon is a researcher specializing in the study of the relationships between the microstructure and mechanical properties of metallic materials, with a marked expertise in fracture mechanisms and physical metallurgy. Her work focuses notably on the analysis of high-strength steels, stainless steels, and architectured alloys, exploring phenomena such as brittle fracture, ductile fracture, fatigue, and toughness. She is particularly interested in the influence of heat treatments, innovative manufacturing processes (such as additive manufacturing), and complex microstructures on mechanical properties. Her research combines advanced experimental approaches (microscopy, mechanical testing, fractographic analyses) and numerical modeling to elucidate local deformation and fracture mechanisms. Her career reflects a shift toward industrial and applied issues while maintaining a strong foundation in the fundamental understanding of metallurgical phenomena.

ATHENS - MP08 - Physics and Mechanics of Random Media
2012 – en cours Lecturer
Based on a review of advanced experimental techniques for describing microstructure, and on typical results involving fluctuations in the phenomena of plasticity, damage, fracture, and flow in porous media, the basic tools of applied probability and random processes are reviewed. Probabilistic tools for describing random media and models, as well as their simulation, are introduced. The physics and mechanics of random media are first presented from the perspective of approximate solutions to partial differential equations with random coefficients. For example, problems in linear electrostatics in stochastic media are studied using a perturbation expansion of stochastic electric and displacement fields, while the limits of the effective permittivity and elastic moduli are derived from variational principles. This homogenization approach, which can be applied to other physical properties such as the composition of permeability or thermal conductivity, is illustrated by third-order bounds. The use of numerical techniques (such as the finite element method) to estimate the homogenized properties of random media based on Monte Carlo simulations is introduced. The limits and numerical techniques are then extended to nonlinear behaviors, such as the plasticity of polycrystals. Given the importance of reliability issues in a wide range of engineering applications, several statistical failure models (brittle, ductile, fatigue) are developed using a probabilistic approach. Materials Science and Engineering (SGM) option
2006 – 2021 Course Director
The 2nd year: discovering, observing, experimenting The two weeks of optional courses are dedicated to a mini-project per pair, in one of the two laboratories of the School (Materials Center in Evry or Forming Center of Materials in Sophia-Antipolis, with over 70 teacher-researchers supporting the option). The topics revolve around a specific industrial project. The focus is on discovering physical, chemical, mechanical phenomena... and quantifying them. A detailed report and an oral defense allow students not only to train in communication techniques but, above all, to learn from one another. Some topics: expertise in the failure of a railway brake, non-conformity expertise of metal joints, welding (instrumented tests and numerical modeling), study of the mechanisms of foam formation for car seats, formation of aerogels for super-insulators or biomedical applications... The 3rd year: understanding, knowing how to choose, optimizing The two highlights of the third year are the optional month (starting at the beginning of the academic year) and the personal project that occupies the rest of the time dedicated to the option. The optional month: "Materials and Engineers" in a given industrial sector. The optional month is dedicated to materials engineering and revolves around a specific industrial sector (2004 and 2005: automotive; 2006 and 2007: aeronautics; 2008 and 2009: construction; 2010 and 2011: energy; 2012 and 2013: health; 2014 and 2015: space). The various activities enable active learning and the formation of a homogeneous group, enriched by the diverse backgrounds and personalities of the students and teachers: industrial visits: processing, transformation, and use of materials in the chosen field; some conferences given by industrial experts; mini-projects on "Industrial Discovery": 5 days per group of 2 to 4 students, on an industrial site, supervised by on-site engineers, focusing on an engineering problem; a written report (internal company note) and an oral presentation allow the different groups to share knowledge and experiences gained in the field; some "courses", in fact preparation sessions for visits and debriefing sessions in the form of Q&A with teachers, regarding conferences and industrial visits. The option work: applying methods and knowledge to solve an industrial problem. The option projects, individual in nature, form the backbone of the third year. Defined as early as October, in agreement with each student's preferences, they focus on a well-identified industrial problem. Lasting at least 4 months (a total of 8 months for polytechnicians in the "specialized track"), they take place on an industrial site, with dual supervision: the company's engineers on one hand and a teacher-researcher from one of the two "Materials" laboratories of the School on the other. The focus is on understanding phenomena and solving the practical problem posed. Some representative option topics from recent years: choice of a material for a Formula 1 car part (Renault, Viry-Châtillon) modeling of thin layers deposited on glass (Saint-Gobain, Thourotte) selection and sizing of an anti-shock foam (SNCF, Le Mans) feasibility of coating pistons by plasma spraying (Toyota, Evry - Belgium - Japan) innovative continuous steel casting process (Vallourec, Aulnoye-Aymeries / Brazil) optimization of the injection process for fiber-reinforced polymer (Bosch, Germany) analysis of gilded enameled glasses from the Middle Ages (Laboratory of French Museums, Paris) prediction of fracture properties of steels for gas pipelines (ArcelorMittal, Ghent, Belgium) acceptability criteria for forging defects (PSA, La Garenne-Colombes) painting defects on plastic automotive body parts (Mécaplast, Monaco) welding of superalloy parts for space launchers (Snecma, Vernon) improvement of non-destructive testing of power plant components (EDF, Saint-Denis) decontamination of concretes used in civil engineering for nuclear power plants (Bouygues, St-Quentin / CEA, Marcoule) improvement of composite part manufacturing for aeronautics (Dassault, Argenteuil) material selection for endoscopic probes with integrated microscope (Mauna Kea Technologies, Paris) Specific features of the option: Hands-on experience! The option includes very few traditional courses: knowledge and skills are acquired in courses offered to all students (core curriculum, specialized teachings) and especially through the sharing of experiences gained by each individual in the field. The goal is to experiment through personal and teamwork (dual supervision: industrial engineer + teacher-researcher). Intensive group work The diversity and number of students in the option allow everyone to learn from one another. This is an effective training in self-learning methods that engineers will use throughout their careers to remain key players in their field of expertise and manage their professional development. Interdisciplinarity The field of materials lies at the intersection of disciplines such as physics, chemistry, mechanics, applied mathematics, and numerical modeling. Option projects often include an experimental part and a modeling part, providing a balanced training in materials culture. The option also covers ceramics, plastics, metals and alloys... as well as ancient objects (archaeology) or the latest innovations (biological steels, bio-based or non-bio-based aerogels...).

2004 – 2017 Course Director
This introductory course on materials (metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics) is a core curriculum course. It was offered to second-year students in the Civil Engineering program from 2004 to 2017 and moved to the first year in 2017. I was responsible for the version taught in the second year. The course handout was published by Presses des Mines (two editions). I taught the first-year course until 2020.
