Concerned about the flood of phones and computers that is leading to harmful overproduction, four friends founded Commown to rent out more repairable and ethical devices. Commown was created as a public interest cooperative (SCIC) to bring together producers, customers and employees of the cooperative. For around £20 or £30 a month, customers can take out a one-year subscription for a device, including maintenance and cover for breakages or theft. The price then decreases to encourage customers to keep the same device. For smartphones, Commown works with Fairphone, which offers eco-designed and more ethical Android devices. Commown is experiencing rapid growth in demand. Finding funding to support such a project is crucial, but this can be a real challenge for a SCIC.
