Three Questions to Help Understand How to Test the Multi-Energy Systems of Tomorrow Before Their Large-Scale Deployment

Electricity, heat, cooling, gas… Whereas these different energy sources were historically produced and managed relatively independently, the energy transition now requires them to operate in a coordinated manner. The challenge: to make the best possible use of all available resources—particularly renewables—to optimize the overall efficiency of energy systems.

This is precisely SixGrid’s goal. More than just a simulation tool, this infrastructure enables the testing of multi-energy systems on a near-industrial scale—up to 1 MW—under conditions that closely mimic reality. Using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) technology, it can combine real physical equipment with digital models to study their interactions in real time.

For manufacturers, the transition from a promising innovation to its integration into a real energy system is a critical step. Testing equipment and its interactions in a controlled environment helps mitigate investment risks by identifying challenges before deployment in production.

A project presented at the Mines Paris Research Day 2026 illustrates the role of research infrastructure in bridging the gap between scientific experimentation and industrial conditions, thereby accelerating the deployment of tomorrow’s energy solutions.
