Marcel Filoche, physics teacher, doubly honoured

Marcel Filoche is a graduate of the École Polytechnique (class of 1982) and obtained his doctorate from Orsay University in 1991.
He is currently CNRS Research Director at the Institut Langevin of the École Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles (ESPCI) in Paris.
Marcel Filoche is dedicated to the study of transport and propagation phenomena in complex systems, both classical and quantum. For the past decade, he has been working on the mathematical theory of the localization landscape, which makes it possible to calculate the behavior of waves in disordered potentials. Since 2018, he has been one of the leaders of the international Simons collaborative project on wave localization.
He is also a Professor at Mines Paris – PSL, where he heads the Physics teaching unit in the Civil Engineering Cycle.
Marcel Filoche and Svitlana Mayboroda (ETH/University of Minnesota) have won the prestigious Elias M. Stein 2024 Award.
Marcel Filoche collaborated with Svitlana Mayboroda to develop the mathematical theory of the localization landscape, which reveals the properties of eigenfunctions of wave operators in disordered potentials.
In this theory, the localization of the eigenfunctions of a Schrödinger-type operator is controlled in different ways by a single, easy-to-calculate “landscape function”. This discovery is supported by solid theoretical results, impressive numerical calculations and convincing physical experiments. It offers a new method for studying eigenfunctions, surpassing existing techniques such as semi-classical analysis or probabilistic approaches, and bringing significant clarity to the phenomenon of wave localization.
Their brilliant contribution to the new perspective in analysis was honored, highlighting their original, powerful, elegant and striking theory of the “localization landscape”.
The Franco-Taiwanese prize, awarded by Taiwan’s National Council for Science and Technology and the Academy of Sciences, honors and encourages Franco-Taiwanese scientific collaboration for contributions in a field of common interest. For 2023, it was awarded jointly to Marcel Filoche and Yuh-Renn Wu, Professor and Director of the Graduate Institute of Photonics and Optoelectronics at the National Taiwan University.
In collaboration with Professor Yuh-Renn Wu, Marcel Filoche has applied the mathematical concepts of the localization landscape to the physics of disordered semiconductors, crucial for electronics and optoelectronics.
They are the only ones able to efficiently simulate 3D quantum transport in devices based on disordered alloys.
