  • 2023 IEEE Fellow for contributions to safety and reliability engineering. The IEEE Fellow is one of the most prestigious honors of the IEEE, and is bestowed upon a very limited number of Senior Members who have contributed importantly to the advancement or application of engineering, science and technology bringing significant value to our society. The number of IEEE Fellows elevated in a year is no more than one-tenth of one percent of the total IEEE voting membership.
  • 2020 2020 Humboldt Prize. This is the first time the prize has been awarded to a researcher in the engineering sciences. A tremendous honor for the “risk analysis” community.

Biography

Enrico Zio is a researcher whose work focuses on the analysis of complex systems, risk management, and the reliability of critical infrastructure. His research addresses a variety of topics, such as probabilistic failure modeling, the optimization of maintenance strategies, and the application of artificial intelligence methods for the prediction and resilience of industrial systems. His contributions include the development of methodological frameworks for assessing vulnerabilities in energy networks, the analysis of cascading effects under extreme conditions (climatic, operational), and the integration of physical models with data-driven approaches to improve the accuracy of diagnostics and prognostics. His recent work also explores the use of transfer learning and causality techniques to address the challenges posed by limited or unlabeled data, as well as the optimization of multi-energy systems under uncertainty. His expertise extends to applied fields such as renewable energy, smart grids, and critical infrastructure, using a systems-based approach that combines simulation, machine learning, and network theory.
