Biography

Patrick Schalbart is a researcher specializing in environmental and energy analysis of buildings and urban systems. His work focuses on assessing impacts using methods such as life cycle assessment (LCA), dynamic thermal simulation, and multi-criteria optimization, applied to issues such as energy-efficient retrofits, indoor air quality, urban heat islands, and the integration of renewable energy. His research aims to develop decision-support tools to balance energy performance, thermal comfort, and the reduction of environmental impacts by integrating dynamic data (electricity mix, climatic conditions) and prospective models. His expertise also covers the modeling of geothermal heat pump systems, optimized management of electrical loads, and the assessment of uncertainties in energy and environmental simulations.

ATHENS - MP30 - Life Cycle of Energy Systems

Guest Lecturer

The course alternates formal lectures on the various aspects of the life cycle—technical, economic, and ecological—with project-based sessions led by practitioners. In this way, the concepts introduced gradually are applied through case studies in workshops. The course therefore requires fairly intensive work concentrated over the course of one week. Feedback from previous years confirms this.

Energy Efficiency of Systems (Research Quarter)

Course Director

Thematic Course Content (Week of November 27–December 1) Introduction: Background, Challenges, and Objectives of Energy Efficiency in Systems Energy Efficiency in Transportation Energy Efficiency in Industry Energy Efficiency in Buildings Urban Energy Modeling Heat conversion and thermodynamic systems District heating networks CO2 capture and utilization Presentations of individual assignments and conclusions 2. Individual Assignments Each student must conduct a literature review on a topic of their choice related to energy efficiency and then present this work orally. Two half-days of class will be devoted to library research training (instructor: Sylvain MÉTAFIOT). 3. Seminar The seminar will complement the thematic course by offering two days of field visits, allowing students to see firsthand how energy efficiency is implemented in the field. Each student will be assigned to a research group and will work for two months on a topic of their choice, from December 4 to February 9.
