Biography

Margaret Kyle is a researcher specializing in the analysis of innovation policies, intellectual property rights (IPR), and their impact on pharmaceutical markets and access to medicines. Her work examines, in particular, the effects of international agreements—such as the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS)—on generic competition, patenting strategies, and price dynamics in both developing and developed countries. Her research highlights the mechanisms through which regulations influence innovation, the diffusion of medical technologies, and inequalities in access to treatments. She also explores the interactions between public policy, markets, and firm behavior, using quantitative methods to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions in public health and intellectual property.

Introduction to Economics

Course Director

Classes will be organized in half-day sessions, consisting of a 1.5-hour lecture followed by a 1.5-hour tutorial during which students will complete application exercises. Students will also participate in two educational games (classroom games), one introducing competitive market theory and the other introducing game theory. This course is a condensed version of the former Microeconomics – Economic Analysis course. It must be scheduled before the Economic Problems course, as it provides the tools that will be used in that course.

Industrial Economics (ECOINDUS) track

Course Director

The first part of the program aims to spark students’ curiosity about industrial economics in preparation for the second-year course. In the third year, the course topics are explored in greater depth through thematic seminars, analysis of seminal articles, and lectures. At the same time, business and market issues are explored, including negotiation games, marketing, intellectual property, public policy, regulation, and corporate finance. Each year, a joint research project is conducted on concrete topics—quality differentiation in wine, local or European policies for telecommunications deployment, the liberalization of the gambling market, the vertical organization of mass retail, and so on. These serve as a common thread throughout the periods dedicated to the specialization. At the end of the program, the third-year capstone internship involves applying an industrial economics approach to a real-world business problem. The introduction of digital technologies, changes in the pricing of goods and services, and regulatory adjustments are often at the heart of the issues addressed. The Second-Year Specialization First industrial study: a series of interviews with industry representatives addressing a current economic issue (competition from New World wines, the rise of online gambling, challenges to the fixed book price system, the impact of the space sector on French Guiana’s economy, China’s real estate market…). The study is based on this current issue: preparation (reading, presentations), interviews with industry representatives and site visits, formulation of the research question, and collective drafting of the final report submitted to the interviewees. The Third-Year Elective In-depth study of the Industrial Economics course: seminars on the economics of institutions and intellectual property, econometrics, game theory, lectures by foreign economists, case studies... Introduction to Business: negotiation simulations, business simulations, industrial financing, a case study on patents, strategy case studies, and lectures by industry executives discussing strategic decisions they helped make and implement. Second industrial survey (same principle as in 2A). Internship focused on economic analysis within a company. The topics are proposed by the company and relate to changes in competition, markets, and regulations; the firm’s competitive positioning; and its development strategies. Some representative elective topics covered in recent years: Return on advertising investments (DDB) Optimization of personnel expenses for a telecommunications operator (COLT) Optimization of auto insurance contract cancellations (Pacifica) Market structure, competition, and dynamics of the television sector in Europe (ABN Amro) Valuation of a publisher’s catalog (Hachette). Outlook for the public-sector IT outsourcing market (ATOS Origin). Growth prospects in the specialty paper market (ArjoWiggins)
