Biography
Laurent Gerbaud is a researcher specializing in drilling technologies and rock mechanics, with particular expertise in optimizing drilling performance in complex geological environments. His work focuses on improving drilling techniques for deep geothermal resources, particularly in hard granitic formations, where he explores innovative methods combining percussion, high-pressure water jetting (HPWJ), and advanced numerical modeling. His research incorporates experimental laboratory approaches, finite and discrete element method (FDEM) simulations, and artificial intelligence tools to predict and optimize interactions between the drilling tool and the rock. Laurent Gerbaud has contributed to European projects such as ORCHYD, where his work has demonstrated significant gains in penetration rates and energy efficiency, while studying the impact of operational conditions (confinement pressure, temperature, etc.) on rock fracturing mechanisms.
