Biography

Cathy Descamps-Large is a researcher specializing in the study of CO₂ capture and separation processes applied to energy systems, particularly integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants and coal- or natural gas-fired thermal power plants. Her work focuses on the technical and energy evaluation of decarbonization solutions, particularly through chemical absorption processes (amines such as MEA or MDEA) and physical absorption processes (methanol), as well as their optimal integration into existing industrial infrastructure. She also analyzes the impacts of these technologies on the overall performance of facilities, including efficiency, costs, and operational constraints. Her research relies on advanced simulations (Aspen Plus™ software) and comparative process studies, while addressing economic aspects related to CO₂ transport and storage. In addition, her contributions include experimental measurements of gas solubility (such as hydrogen in methanol) and the modeling of thermodynamic constants, thereby enhancing the accuracy of separation process design tools.

The curriculum consists of lectures by public and private sector stakeholders involved in technological risks (government agencies, companies, and organizations), case studies, and industrial site visits. It covers, in particular: the analysis of major technological risks, the prevention of chemical and nuclear risks, the role of the relevant technical agencies (Ministry of the Environment, Nuclear Safety Authority, etc.), and crisis management (definition, crisis simulations, etc.).
