At Mines Paris – PSL, research and teaching rely on a wide range of professions and expertise. This first video launches Mines Portraits, a series highlighting the individuals who, day after day, help bring the School to life and support its scientific, technical, and human projects.

How do you build scientific instruments… when they don’t yet exist?

At Mines Paris – PSL, certain roles are essential to research. They enable scientific teams to go further by making it possible to explore phenomena that are still unknown or difficult to observe or measure.

This is the case for David Marques, Workshop Manager at the Energy, Environment, Processes Center (CEEP), located on the Fontainebleau campus.

Together with his team, he designs and builds custom scientific equipment tailored to researchers’ specific needs—unique devices, sometimes capable of operating under extreme conditions, that make it possible to test, measure, and experiment where no standard tools exist.

These developments play a key role in the Center’s research projects, whether in energy, industrial processes, or environmental impact. Some extend beyond national borders and are used in international collaborations.

A role at the intersection of multiple areas of expertise

The Workshop Manager’s role goes beyond fabrication. It sits at the crossroads of several skill sets: understanding scientific needs, technical design, material selection, prototyping, and real-world adjustments. Close collaboration with research teams requires rigor, creativity, and adaptability. Each project is unique and often involves developing entirely new solutions.

Expertise serving research

This testimony highlights a rare skill set and a high level of technical expertise in support of ambitious scientific projects. The role reflects the breadth and diversity of competencies that contribute, every day, to the School’s research activities.
