Defense and security: 3 questions for Pierre-Olivier Bouchard, lecturer and researcher (CEMEF)

Recherche Video interview
Published on 18 November 2025
During Industry Week, Mines Paris – PSL is highlighting the research project “Defense Materials Under Complex Loads,” presented at Mines Paris Research Day 2025 and part of the Defense and Security challenge

This project illustrates the strength of the collaboration between the School, Naval Group, and the French Defense Procurement Agency (DGA) in designing naval structures capable of withstanding extreme and complex stresses. In this video, Pierre-Olivier Bouchard, professor and researcher at CEMEF Mines Paris – PSL (CNRS UMR 7635), answers three key questions:

  • How can the behavior of massive metal parts subjected to complex loads be modeled?
  • What laboratory tests can be used to reproduce the shaping stages or the effects of an explosion?
  • How can innovation be accelerated while ensuring a high level of safety?

A concrete demonstration of how the synergy between materials science, mechanical engineering, and industrial needs paves the way for robust, tested, simulated solutions that are ready to face extreme conditions. More information about the project: https://researchday.minesparis.psl.eu..
