Modélisation prospective
Biographie

It must be acknowledged that the expected energy transition will not occur spontaneously and will require active intervention (from stakeholders: governments, companies, etc.). This expresses a mandatory shift from open-loop (past) revolutions to closed-loop energy transition in order to achieve a decarbonization target in time. This course proposes to understand the stakes underlying the design of an actual low-carbon transition. Past transitions have often been driven by better service and performance, or cheaper energy; we will explore the fundamental drivers of these past observed transitions and their dynamics described by empirical data collected through the juxtaposition of historical and philosophical points of views in order to better understand obstacles that the expected low carbon transition faces such as: inertia of technologies and infrastructures, the effectiveness and economic competitiveness of low-carbon energy technologies (at least during past decades), and the level of investment required. In addition to a modification of the technology and fuel used, the energy transition must involve a change in consumer behavior (notably in the transport and residential sectors). Study of current transitions (successful or unsuccessful): present the technical, economic, sociological and political conditions involved in elaborating energy transitions throughout the world; in order to capture the greatest number of explanatory elements and relevant drivers of the ongoing or foreseen transitions, various and significant regions will be explored, since the questions tackled cannot be restricted to a universal vision centered on a particular model.
