Biographie
Dr. Laurent Gerbaud is a researcher and engineering leader at Mines Paris – PSL University, within the Geosciences Department, where he heads the Engineering Geology and Geomechanics research team. He has been with Mines Paris since 1997 and also manages the drilling testing laboratory in Pau, developing and overseeing experimental and applied research in drilling, rock mechanics, and geomechanics. Since 2022, he has led a multidisciplinary research group of around 25 people, including 12 researchers. Dr. Gerbaud’s expertise lies in drilling technologies, drill bit design, rock–tool interaction, percussive and hybrid drilling systems, and real-time drilling optimization. He has coordinated major national, European, and industrial R&D projects, including the H2020 ORCHYD project (2021–2024), focused on combining high-pressure water jets and percussion to improve hard-rock drilling performance. His work also covers drilling dysfunction detection, directional behavior of drilling bits, hydraulic hammer drilling, casing wear, and drill string dynamics. He earned his PhD from Mines Paris in 1999 with a thesis on optimizing PDC–rock interaction for small-diameter oil drilling bit design, following an engineering degree from Centrale Nantes. He also teaches drilling at the University of Pau and supervises doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.
