Métaux de Transition

Documentary exhibition from February 14 to March 11, 2023

From February 14, 2023, the Museum of Mineralogy is offering the public the exhibition “MINERALS, AT THE HEART OF THE ENERGY TRANSITION”. Created by students of the IGE Specialized Master of ISIGE Mines Paris, this exhibition allows visitors to discover 6 of the key minerals of the energy transition: what is the growth in demand? What are the industrial, environmental, and social issues? What tensions on reserves? What are the geopolitical risks? What recycling options are there?

Why organize this exhibition?

Current global warming is caused largely by greenhouse-gas emissions from fossil fuels. Alongside sobriety and efficiency gains, our societies must learn to do away with these energies as much as possible, and implement new energy mixes. However, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels often requires increasing the use of mineral resources. Yet these resources, coming from the earth’s crust, are exhaustible in the more or less long term.

As part of module 2 of the IGE Specialized Master of ISIGE Mines Paris entitled “Questioning and analyzing the key challenges of tomorrow”, students explored climate and energy issues, and how mineral resources can help our societies in their transition to a low-carbon world.

This exploration was carried out by the students according to the following 5 themes:

• Physicochemical properties • Mining data • Industrial and economic data, particularly with regard to the energy transition • Geopolitical issues • Recycling potential

The 6 minerals or families of minerals studied are as follows: copper, nickel, lithium, platinum, cobalt, rare earths.

After presenting their analysis work before a jury composed of teacher-researchers from the School, the students were accompanied by Cécile Schwartz and Damien Goetz, professor at Mines Paris responsible for the Soil and Subsoil option, to finalize their presentations, accessible on the ISIGE website.

With the support of Sabrina Ramessur, Communication Manager at ISIGE, this work then led to the creation of 6 kakemonos each dedicated to one of the 6 minerals.

Visit the exhibition

The temporary exhibition takes place within the Museum of Mineralogy from February 14 to March 11, 2023. The exhibition is open during museum opening hours, with a standard entrance (no additional cost to see the exhibition). This exhibition – coordinated by Cécile Schwartz, co-head of the IGE Specialized Master’s program and Sabrina Ramessur, Communication Manager at ISIGE – is the result of a project initiated as part of module 2 of the IGE Specialized Master’s program at ISIGE Mines Paris.

To present the whole of this exhibition, a 7th kakemono was designed by Cécile Schwartz, Damien Goetz and Sabrina Ramessur.

The Museum of Mineralogy (entrance by 60, boulevard Saint-Michel 75006) is open to the public upon reservation.
