An exceptional collection

With nearly 100,000 specimens, 5,000 of which are on public display, the museum houses some 2,900 mineral species – an impressive representation of the known diversity. Discover meteorites, gems, synthetic minerals, spectacular rocks, as well as rare and unique specimens. Among its treasures is one of the richest collections of type specimens, true international scientific references.

Housed in the Hôtel de Vendôme since 1815, the museum has preserved its period charm: Hungarian oak display cases, interconnected rooms, and a 19th-century ambiance. This exceptional setting offers visitors a timeless experience in an atmosphere that is both scientific and poetic.

A little history…

The Mineralogy Museum was founded during the Age of Enlightenment, by royal decree, in 1783. Initially a “cabinet of curiosities”, it became a public collection under the direction of René Just Haüy, the founding father of crystallography. Enriched by illustrious geologists and passionate collectors, this collection is today a living testament to more than 200 years of Earth sciences.
