PhD Student Spotlight – Welcoming Corrado Giancoli to Centre PERSEE – Mines Paris – PSL
The Centre PERSEE – Mines Paris – PSL is pleased to welcome Corrado Giancoli, who joined the research team on 15 October 2025 as a PhD student. Corrado brings a multidisciplinary background spanning quantitative finance, machine learning, and quantum physics, positioning him uniquely to address one of today’s most ambitious scientific challenges:
the application of quantum computing to sustainable energy systems.
Corrado’s doctoral research, conducted under the supervision of Professor Georges Kariniotakis and Dr. Simon Camal at Centre PERSEE, and in co-direction with Professor Fei Teng from Imperial College London, is titled:
“Quantum Machine Learning and Computing Algorithms for Optimising Sustainable Energy Systems.”
This project investigates how quantum optimisation techniques and quantum-enhanced machine learning models can support critical power system functions, including:
Renewable energy forecasting,
Unit commitment and operational planning,
Grid operation under uncertainty and variability.
The objective of the work is twofold: develop quantum-based algorithms that can be rigorously benchmarked against state-of-the-art classical approaches, and pave the way for their future integration into operational tools for energy system operators.
By merging expertise from optimisation, quantum information science, and energy systems engineering, Corrado’s research aims to:
Enhance the robustness and efficiency of decision-making processes in increasingly complex energy systems.
Improve forecasting and data-driven management of renewable and flexibility resources through quantum machine learning.
Translate advances in quantum technologies into concrete, real-world applications supporting the energy transition.
This interdisciplinary PhD is funded by the Institut des Transformations Numériques (ITN) Mines Paris – PSL and conducted within the ERSEI Group of Centre PERSEE, in close collaboration with Imperial College London. It embodies the commitment of Mines Paris – PSL to advance research at the interface of emerging digital technologies and sustainable energy.
