Senior Research Engineer – Science and Technology Project Leader, Centre for Robotics, MINES ParisTech, PSL Université Paris
Dr. Sotiris Manitsaris is Senior Researcher and Science-Technology Project and Team Leader at the joint Centre for Robotics between MINES ParisTech (PSL Université Paris) and ARMINES. He holds a University Degree in Applied Mathematics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece), a double Master Degree in Local Development from the University of Blaise-Pascal (France) and the Engineering School of the University of Thessaly (Greece) and a PhD in Computer Science – Computer Vision for Gesture Recognition: Movement Analysis and Stochastic Modeling in Musical Interaction – from the University of Macedonia (Greece). He did three postdoctoral researches. The first research was in the Biomedical Engineering and more precisely in the visual-speech recognition and synthesis based on vocal tract movements at the ESPCI ParisTech and the Pierre and Marie Curie University (France). The second research was in the Factory of the Future with the aim of a professional gesture recognition for Human-Robot Collaboration in the Industrial Chair between MINES ParisTech the automotive industry PSA Group. The third postdoctoral research experience was an excellence grant on movement-based interactive spaces and surfaces for the Creative and Cultural Industries, hosted by MINES ParisTech, IRCAM (France) and the University of Thessaly (Greece). He has coordinated the development of the « Intangible Musical Instrument » within the « i-Treasures » FP7 project, which was also the starting point of EMBODME (SpinOff of MINES ParisTech). He is currently involved in a number of H2020 projects and he has strong collaboration with startups and industrial groups, such as PSA, FIAT, SAGEM and a number of Creative and Cultural Industries, such as Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy. His research focuses on motion capturing, machine learning, motion pattern recognition and movement-based interaction with machines, connected objects and sensorimotor human learning. He leads the Post-Master’s Degree AIMove – “Artificial Intelligence and Movement in Industries and Creation”,which is based on a consortium established by IDIAP, GOLD, CERTH and GAIIA. Moreover, he is the President of the GAIIA Association (Gesture & AI in Industry and Arts), which operates as a hub which brings together experts and the public-at-large in the field of Artificial Intelligence and human movement. Education: - PhD in Applied Informatics (Docteur en Sciences) Thesis: “Computer Vision for Gesture Recognition: Gesture Stochastic Modelling in Musical Interaction”, Department of Applied Informatics, University of Macedonia (UOM), Thessaloniki, Greece - Double Master in Engineering (Dipl. Ing. en Développement Local) “Territorial Dynamics and Local Development”, Engineering School of University of Thessaly (UTH), Volos, Greece – Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, France - Bachelor in Mathematics (Ptychion) Specialization in Applied Mathematics, Department of Mathematics, Artistotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece
