Un peu d’histoire …
Ce colloque s’inscrit dans une dynamique enclenchée en 1985 avec le premier International Symposium on Aerogels (ISA 1), organisé et présidé à Würzburg par le Professeur Jochen Fricke du ZAE Bayern. Ce rendez-vous international a permis de structurer une communauté d’acteurs académiques, institutionnels et industriels et de conférer à cette nouvelle famille de matériaux ses premières « lettres de noblesse ». L’aventure ISA s’est achevée en 2003 aux Etats-Unis (ISA7, Alexandria, Washington DC). Malgré la forte implication des industriels nord-américains CABOT et ASPEN, les grands espoirs fondés sur leurs propriétés assez exceptionnelles n’ont pas convergé rapidement vers l’avènement applicatif attendu. Les liens de la communauté internationale se sont alors distendus et chacun s’en est alors retourné vers ses activités nationales …
Les avancées scientifiques réalisées depuis lors par le monde académique, associées à l’arrivée de nouveaux acteurs industriels (BASF, ENERSENS, …), ont permis - sous la houlette de Michel Perrut (SEPAREX) et Irina Smirnova (TUHH) - de « battre le rappel » et de redonner corps à une nouvelle communauté internationale. Après les éditions 2012 (ENSIC, Nancy) et 2014 (TUHH, Hambourg), c’est au tour de MINES ParisTech d’organiser en septembre 2016 la troisième édition de l’International Seminar on Aerogels.
Le Centre PERSÉE étudie les matériaux aérogels pour l’énergétique depuis l’orée des années 90 sur la base des travaux initiés et coordonnés par Patrick Achard et menés en partenariat avec l’Université Claude Bernard (Lyon 1), le CSTB et la société PCAS et avec le soutien de l’ADEME. Une attention toute particulière a d’abord été consacrée aux superisolants thermiques, puis le champ s’est élargi aux matériaux d’électrodes de dispositifs de stockage et de conversion d’énergie (batteries Li-ion, piles à combustibles de type PEM) et autres photocatalyseurs. PERSÉE collabore depuis plus de 10 ans maintenant avec le CEMEF sur la voie biosourcée. Les travaux conduits par MINES ParisTech dans cette sphère ont acquis aujourd’hui une notoriété internationale certaine. L’organisation de ce futur colloque en est un beau témoignage.

The movement was established in 1985 with the first International Symposium on Aerogels (ISA 1), organized and chaired by the Professor Jochen Fricke of ZAE Bayern in Wurzburg, Germany. This international event helped to structure the community of academic and industrial parties and gave this new family of materials its first acclaims. The ISA adventure ended in 2003 with the ISA 7 held in the United States (Alexandria, Washington DC). Despite the strong industrial involvement from the North American companies CABOT and ASPEN, the big hopes for the exceptional properties of these materials did not quickly convert into the awaited widespread application. The links of the international community were strained and everyone returned to their bases…
The continued scientific advancements in the academy along with new involvement from the industry (BASF, ENERSENS…), allowed – under the leadership of Michel Perrut (SEPAREX) and Irina Smirnova (TUHH) – to “drum up” the collective interest and restore the body to a new international community. After the 2012 (ENSIC, Nancy) and 2014 (TUHH, Hamburg) installments, MINES ParisTech is taking its turn in organizing the third edition of the International Seminar on Aerogels in September of 2016 in Sophia Antipolis (France).
International recognition…
The aerogel materials for energy applications have been studied at the PERSEE Center since the early 90’s based on the work initiated and coordinated at the French level by Patrick Achard and conducted in collaboration with the University Claude Bernard (Lyon 1), CSTB (Grenoble) and PCAS (Longjumeau) and with the support from ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency). Special attention has been dedicated to the thermal superinsulators and then the study field was further expanded to the electrode materials for energy conversion and storage (PEM fuel cells, Li-ion batteries) and other photo catalysts (e.g. TiO2-based). Additionally, for over 10 years now, PERSEE has been collaborating with the CEMEF for utilizing biobased resources in aerogels. The work conducted by MINES ParisTech in this domain has gained certain international recognition. The organization of this conference is a further testament to this.
